Troubleshooting: connectivity issues

Benchmrk requires an internet connection to fetch survey mark data from jurisdiction APIs. This page covers common connectivity issues and how to handle them.

How Benchmrk uses the network

Benchmrk fetches data on demand — when you search for marks, pan the map, or open mark details, the app queries the relevant jurisdiction's API in real time. There is no offline map or data cache for survey marks.

Behaviour when losing connection

If you lose network connectivity while using Benchmrk:

  • Map tiles — previously loaded map tiles remain visible, but new areas will not load.
  • Mark data — marks already displayed on the map remain visible, but new searches and map pans will not return results.
  • Mark details — if you have already opened a mark's details, the data remains visible. Opening a new mark's details will fail.
  • Navigation — an active navigation session may continue with the already-calculated route, but re-routing will not work.
  • Search — searches will fail or return no results.

Resolving connectivity issues

Check your internet connection

  1. Open Safari or another app to verify you have internet access.
  2. If on mobile data, check your signal strength and data allowance.
  3. If on Wi-Fi, verify the network is connected and working.

Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data

If one connection type is not working, try switching to the other:

  • Turn Wi-Fi off to use mobile data, or vice versa.
  • Go to Settings → Wi-Fi or Settings → Mobile Data to manage connections.

Restart the app

If the app is not recovering after your connection is restored:

  1. Force-close Benchmrk (swipe up from the bottom, swipe the app card away).
  2. Reopen the app.

Check for API outages

If your internet connection is working but Benchmrk is not returning data:

  • The jurisdiction's data API may be experiencing downtime.
  • Try switching to a different jurisdiction to see if the issue is jurisdiction-specific.
  • Wait a few minutes and try again.

Working in low-connectivity areas

When planning fieldwork in areas with poor mobile coverage:

tip

Before heading to a low-connectivity area, search for and view the mark details while you still have a connection. The details panel will remain visible as long as you do not navigate away from it.

  • Load the map area and mark details while you have connectivity.
  • Use screenshots to capture mark coordinates and details for offline reference.
  • Export mark data to CSV or PDF before going into the field — exported files are saved to your device and available offline.

What Benchmrk does NOT support

  • Offline map downloads — there is no feature to download map areas for offline use.
  • Offline mark data sync — mark data is not cached for offline access.
  • Background data sync — the app does not sync data in the background.
