AI Error Scenarios

AI Assist relies on multiple services — the Benchmrk backend, the AI engine, and jurisdiction data sources. When something goes wrong, you'll see an error message in the AI Assist panel. This page documents common errors, their causes, and how to resolve them.

Quota exhausted

Message: "You have used all your AI analyses for this month."

Cause: Your monthly usage quota has reached zero.

Resolution:

  • Wait for your monthly quota to reset (aligned with your billing cycle).
  • Upgrade your subscription tier for a higher monthly allocation.
  • See AI Quotas for details on quota management.

Analysis timeout

Message: "The analysis took too long to complete. Please try again."

Cause: The AI analysis exceeded the server-side timeout. This can happen when:

  • The search area contains an unusually large number of survey marks.
  • The AI service is experiencing high latency.
  • Network conditions between the Benchmrk backend and the AI service are degraded.

Resolution:

  • Try the analysis again — timeouts are often transient.
  • Reduce the max distance preference to limit the number of marks the AI needs to evaluate.
  • If the problem persists, try again later.

Outside supported regions

Message: "AI analysis is not available for this location."

Cause: The pin was dropped in a location outside the supported jurisdictions (NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, TAS, NT, ACT), or in an area where the jurisdiction's data source doesn't have coverage.

Resolution:

  • Ensure your pin is within an Australian state or territory boundary.
  • Check that the correct jurisdiction is selected — the pin location should match the active jurisdiction.
  • Move the pin closer to an area with known survey mark coverage.

No marks found

Message: "No survey marks were found near this location matching your criteria."

Cause: The AI searched the area around your pin but found no marks that match your configured preferences (status, accuracy class, time window, distance).

Resolution:

  • Increase the max distance preference to widen the search area.
  • Relax the mark status filter (e.g. include destroyed marks).
  • Remove or lower the horizontal/vertical class minimum thresholds.
  • Widen the time window or set it to "No restriction".
  • Try dropping the pin in a different location.

Unexpected AI recommendations

Cause: The AI returned results that don't seem relevant to your needs.

Resolution:

  • Review your preferences — ensure the project type, priority, and filters match your actual requirements.
  • Add more detail in the additional notes field to give the AI better context.
  • Check that the correct jurisdiction is selected.
  • Remember that AI recommendations are suggestions — always verify mark suitability in the point details panel.
tip

If the AI consistently returns unexpected results, try being more specific in the additional notes field. For example, instead of "construction project", try "residential building setout requiring high horizontal accuracy within 200m of the site".

Server error

Message: "Something went wrong. Please try again later."

Cause: An unexpected error occurred on the Benchmrk backend or the AI service.

Resolution:

  • Wait a moment and try again.
  • If the error persists, check your network connection.
  • If the problem continues for an extended period, the service may be experiencing an outage.

Network error

Message: "Unable to reach the server. Check your internet connection."

Cause: The request couldn't reach the Benchmrk backend due to a network issue.

Resolution:

  • Check your internet connection.
  • Try refreshing the page.
  • If you're behind a corporate firewall or VPN, ensure the Benchmrk API endpoints are not blocked.
