Jurisdiction Switching

When you change the active jurisdiction in Benchmrk, several things happen simultaneously: the map re-centres, layers update, and the interface adapts to the new state or territory's data schema. This page explains the full switching process.

How to switch jurisdictions

  1. Click the jurisdiction dropdown in the header.
  2. Select the target jurisdiction (NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, TAS, NT, or ACT).
  3. The switch takes effect immediately.

What happens when you switch

Map re-centering

The map flies to the new jurisdiction's default viewport — a centre point and zoom level that shows the state or territory at an overview level. This ensures you're looking at the right part of Australia after switching.

For example:

  • Switching from NSW to VIC flies the map from the Sydney region to the Melbourne region.
  • Switching from QLD to TAS flies from Brisbane to Hobart.

Layer activation and deactivation

The Layer Manager updates to reflect the new jurisdiction's mark types:

  • Previous jurisdiction's layers are deactivatedSurvey marks from the old jurisdiction are no longer rendered on the map.
  • New jurisdiction's layers are activated — Mark types specific to the new jurisdiction become available.
  • Layer Manager resets — The visibility toggles update to show the new jurisdiction's mark types, all enabled by default.
info

Layer Manager visibility preferences are not carried between jurisdictions. When you switch, all mark types in the new jurisdiction start as visible. This prevents confusion from having hidden types you didn't intentionally hide.

Data schema changes

The point details panel adapts to the new jurisdiction's Field Map:

  • Field labels change to match the new jurisdiction's naming conventions.
  • Jurisdiction-specific fields appear or disappear.
  • Symbology icons update to the new jurisdiction's visual style.

Search context changes

  • Active search results are cleared — results from the previous jurisdiction are no longer relevant.
  • The search bar remains in the same search mode but is ready for queries in the new jurisdiction.
  • Mark ID formats may differ — an ID valid in NSW won't necessarily work in VIC.

Profile persistence

Your preferred jurisdiction is saved to your user profile:

  • Automatic save — When you switch jurisdictions, the selection is persisted to your profile.
  • Restored on login — The next time you sign in, Benchmrk loads your last-used jurisdiction automatically.
  • Cross-device — Your jurisdiction preference follows your account, not your browser.
tip

If you primarily work in one jurisdiction, you only need to set it once. Benchmrk remembers your choice and loads it every time you sign in.

Switching and the Ledger

Your Ledger is not affected by jurisdiction switching:

  • Saved marks from all jurisdictions remain in your Ledger.
  • You can click a Ledger entry from a different jurisdiction — the map will fly to that mark's location and temporarily show data from that jurisdiction.
  • The jurisdiction selector may update to match the Ledger entry's jurisdiction when you navigate to it.
