Search and Map Interaction

When you perform a search in Benchmrk, the results don't just appear in a list — they drive the map. This page explains how search results interact with the map canvas, including auto-selection, fly-to behaviour, and the results panel.

The search-to-map flow

Every search follows the same interaction pattern:

  1. You submit a query in any search mode (Mark, Address, or Coordinates).
  2. Results appear in the sidebar results panel.
  3. The first result is auto-selected — the map flies to its location and the mark is highlighted.
  4. You can click other results to fly to their locations and view their details.

Auto-selection

When search results are returned, Benchmrk automatically selects the first result in the list. This triggers two things:

  • The map flies to the selected mark's location.
  • The mark is highlighted on the map with a selection indicator.

This auto-selection means you get immediate visual feedback without needing to click anything — the most relevant result is shown on the map right away.

info

Auto-selection applies to the first result only. If the first result isn't what you're looking for, click a different result in the panel to navigate to it.

Fly-to behaviour

The fly-to animation smoothly pans and zooms the map to centre on the selected survey mark. The behaviour varies slightly depending on the search type:

Search typeFly-to targetZoom level
Mark searchThe matched mark's coordinatesZooms in to show the mark in detail
Address searchThe geocoded address locationZooms to show nearby marks
Coordinate searchThe entered coordinatesZooms to the search area

After the fly-to animation completes, you can pan and zoom freely to explore the surrounding area.

The results panel

The results panel appears in the sidebar when search results are available. It shows:

  • Mark identifier — The name or ID of each matching mark.
  • Mark type icon — The symbology icon indicating the mark type.
  • Status summary — A brief indication of the mark's current status.
  • Distance (for Address and Coordinate searches) — How far the mark is from the search location.

Interacting with results

  • Click a result to fly to its location and highlight it on the map.
  • Click the selected result again (or click the mark on the map) to open the full point details panel.
  • Scroll the list to see more results if the search returned many matches.

Map click interaction

You can also interact in the reverse direction — clicking marks directly on the map:

  1. Click a visible survey mark on the map.
  2. The mark is selected and highlighted.
  3. The point details panel opens showing the mark's full metadata.
  4. If a search is active, the results panel scrolls to highlight the clicked mark (if it's in the results).
tip

Combining search with map clicks is a powerful workflow. Search to get to the right area, then click individual marks on the map to explore nearby points that might not be in your search results.

How panels work together

The results panel and point details panel work as a coordinated system:

  • Results panel — Shows the list of search results. Always visible after a search.
  • Point details panel — Shows full details for a single selected mark. Opens when you click a result or a mark on the map.
  • Both can be open simultaneously — The results panel stays visible so you can quickly switch between marks.

Closing the results panel clears the search. Closing the point details panel deselects the current mark but keeps the search results visible.
