Layer Manager
The Layer Manager controls which survey mark types are visible on the map. It acts as a filter layer between the data source and what you see — both on the map and in search results.
What the Layer Manager does
Every jurisdiction has multiple types of survey marks: permanent survey marks (PSMs), trigonometric stations, benchmarks, traverse stations, and others. The Layer Manager lets you toggle visibility for each type independently.
When a mark type is hidden:
- Marks of that type are not rendered on the map.
- Marks of that type are excluded from search results (Mark, Address, and Coordinate searches).
- The point details panel still works if you have a direct link to a hidden mark, but you won't discover it through normal browsing.
When a mark type is visible:
- Marks appear on the map with their jurisdiction-specific symbology (icon, colour).
- Marks are included in search results.
Using the Layer Manager
- Open the Layer Manager from the sidebar controls.
- You'll see a list of mark types available in the current jurisdiction, each with a toggle.
- Toggle mark types on or off to control visibility.
- Changes take effect immediately — the map and search results update in real time.
If you're searching for a specific mark and can't find it, check the Layer Manager first. The mark type might be hidden.
Per-jurisdiction symbology
Each jurisdiction defines its own set of mark types and visual symbols. This means:
- Different jurisdictions have different mark types — NSW might have mark types that don't exist in VIC, and vice versa.
- Symbols vary by jurisdiction — The same conceptual mark type (e.g. a permanent survey mark) may use different icons or colours in different jurisdictions.
- The Layer Manager list changes when you switch jurisdictions — it always reflects the mark types available in the currently selected jurisdiction.
Example: NSW vs VIC
| Feature | NSW | VIC |
|---|---|---|
| Mark types available | PSM, Trig Station, Benchmark, etc. | PSM, Trig Station, Benchmark, etc. |
| Symbol style | NSW-specific icons and colours | VIC-specific icons and colours |
| Default visibility | All types visible | All types visible |
When you switch jurisdictions, the Layer Manager resets to show the new jurisdiction's mark types. Your visibility preferences from the previous jurisdiction are not carried over.
How visibility affects search
The Layer Manager's visibility settings act as a post-filter on search results:
- The search engine finds all marks matching your query.
- The Layer Manager filters out marks whose type is currently hidden.
- Only visible marks are returned in the results panel.
This applies to all three search modes:
- Mark search — Hidden mark types are excluded even if the ID matches exactly.
- Address search — Hidden mark types near the geocoded location are excluded.
- Coordinate search — Hidden mark types within the search radius are excluded.
If you're getting zero results for a search you expect to return marks, the Layer Manager is the first thing to check. A common mistake is accidentally hiding the mark type you're looking for.
Best practices
- Start with all types visible — When exploring a new area, keep all mark types enabled to get the full picture.
- Filter down as needed — Once you know which mark types are relevant to your project, hide the rest to reduce visual clutter.
- Re-enable before searching — If you're about to search for a specific mark and aren't sure of its type, enable all types first.
