Jurisdictions Reference
Benchmrk supports all Australian states and territories as separate jurisdictions. Each jurisdiction has its own survey data schema, symbology, and default map viewport. This page documents the differences across all seven jurisdictions.
Supported jurisdictions
| Jurisdiction | Full name | Abbreviation |
|---|---|---|
| New South Wales | New South Wales | NSW |
| Victoria | Victoria | VIC |
| Queensland | Queensland | QLD |
| South Australia | South Australia | SA |
| Tasmania | Tasmania | TAS |
| Northern Territory | Northern Territory | NT |
| Australian Capital Territory | Australian Capital Territory | ACT |
Data schema differences
Each jurisdiction maintains its own survey data infrastructure, which means the fields available for survey marks differ across states. Benchmrk uses the Field Map system to normalise these differences in the point details panel.
Common fields (all jurisdictions)
These fields are available across all jurisdictions, though the underlying field names differ:
- Mark identifier (name/ID)
- Mark type/category
- Status (active, destroyed, etc.)
- Geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude)
- Projected coordinates (easting/northing in MGA)
- Horizontal and vertical class
- Geodetic datum reference
Jurisdiction-specific fields
Some fields are unique to specific jurisdictions:
| Jurisdiction | Notable unique fields |
|---|---|
| NSW | Detailed sketch references, historical mark names, SCIMS-specific metadata |
| VIC | LASSI-specific fields, mark sketch image references |
| QLD | SCDM-specific metadata, plan references |
| SA | SA-specific survey plan references |
| TAS | LIST-specific metadata |
| NT | NT survey-specific fields |
| ACT | ACT-specific administrative fields |
Symbology differences
Each jurisdiction defines its own set of mark type symbols — the icons and colours used to represent different categories of survey marks on the map.
How symbology works
- Mark types are rendered on the map using jurisdiction-specific icons.
- The Layer Manager shows the mark types available in the current jurisdiction.
- Switching jurisdictions updates the Layer Manager to reflect the new jurisdiction's mark types.
Common mark types
While the exact categories and visual styles differ, most jurisdictions include:
- Permanent Survey Marks (PSMs) — High-quality, permanently placed marks.
- Trigonometric Stations — Marks used for triangulation surveys.
- Benchmarks — Marks with established height values.
- Traverse Stations — Marks placed during traverse surveys.
The number and granularity of mark types varies significantly. NSW and VIC tend to have more detailed type classifications than smaller jurisdictions.
Default map viewports
When you select a jurisdiction, the map centres on that state or territory's default viewport.
| Jurisdiction | Default centre | Default zoom |
|---|---|---|
| NSW | -32.95°, 147.68° (central NSW) | 6.3 |
| VIC | -36.51°, 145.06° (central VIC) | 7.0 |
| QLD | -20.75°, 146.41° (central QLD) | 5.6 |
| SA | -34.98°, 137.81° (Adelaide region) | 7.5 |
| TAS | -42.07°, 146.45° (central TAS) | 7.7 |
| NT | -19.05°, 133.39° (central NT) | 5.8 |
| ACT | -35.34°, 149.09° (Canberra) | 10.2 |
Choosing the right jurisdiction
Search results are scoped to the active jurisdiction. If you're searching for a mark in NSW but have VIC selected, you won't find it. Always check the jurisdiction selector in the header before searching.
