Map navigation

Benchmrk's interactive map is powered by Mapbox (Mapbox-iOS-SDK 5.2) and serves as the primary interface for discovering and interacting with survey control marks.

Basemap styles

Benchmrk offers two basemap styles, accessible via the layer manager:

Hybrid

A satellite imagery basemap with road labels and place names overlaid. This is useful for identifying landmarks, buildings, and terrain features when locating marks in the field.

Terrain

A topographic-style basemap showing elevation contours, land cover, and road networks. This is useful for understanding the terrain around a mark, particularly in rural or bushland areas.

Basemap styles

To switch basemap styles, tap the Layer button on the map screen and select your preferred style.

Jurisdiction-specific marker icons

Each jurisdiction has its own set of map marker icons that reflect the mark types and symbology used by that state or territory's survey authority. Benchmrk includes separate icon sets for:

  • NSW — New South Wales
  • VIC — Victoria
  • QLD — Queensland
  • SA — South Australia
  • TAS — Tasmania
  • NT — Northern Territory
  • ACT — Australian Capital Territory

When you switch jurisdictions, the marker icons on the map update to match the selected jurisdiction's visual style.

info

Marker icons are colour-coded and shaped to distinguish between mark types (e.g. PM, TS, BM, SSM, PSM) within each jurisdiction. The specific colours and shapes vary by jurisdiction.

User location tracking modes

The location button in the bottom-right corner of the map cycles through three tracking modes:

Location mode

The map shows your current position as a blue dot. The map does not follow your movement.

Location mode

Heading mode

The map shows your position and rotates to match the direction your device is facing. Useful when orienting yourself in the field.

Tracking mode

The map continuously follows your position as you move. The view stays centred on your location.

Tap the location button repeatedly to cycle through these modes. The button icon changes to indicate the active mode.

Zoom behaviour

  • At low zoom levels, marks are clustered to avoid visual clutter.
  • As you zoom in, individual marks become visible with their jurisdiction-specific icons.
  • The map loads mark data for the visible area from the jurisdiction API.
tip

If marks are not appearing, try zooming in further. At very wide zoom levels, marks may be clustered or not yet loaded from the API.

Interacting with marks on the map

  • Tap a mark pin to display a summary card at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the summary card to open the full Point details panel.
